Dr. Dimitris Babalis at 16th Pharma & Health Conference: How the National Health System (ESY) is being reformed
- October 8, 2025
Dr. Dimitris Babalis, a Specialist in Internal Medicine, Intensive Care, and Emergency Medicine, Director of the Emergency Department (ED) at Larisa General Hospital, spoke about the new AI system for triaging patients in the ED, a necessary process that is often undervalued in Greece, considering the long wait times. The system aims to assess who needs to wait safely, who can wait for a shorter time, and which cases require immediate attention, such as preserving tissue in cases like strokes, where time directly impacts the quality of patient health.
The system makes the triage process more accurate and helps healthcare professionals conducting the triage feel more confident. This is achieved in two ways: First, there is a clinical algorithm that standardizes the triage process, ensuring that all healthcare workers follow the same steps based on the symptoms. Second, the AI system is based on specific symptom weights, vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, oxygen levels), and is integrated with the Hellenic National Health Service (HIDIKA) and the patient's social security number (AMKA), with plans to eventually link to electronic medical records, giving emphasis to the patient's medical history.

Statement by the Minister of Health of Greece regarding the ERTRIAGE system
- 17 September 2025
The ERTRIAGE system, which supports patient triage by analyzing clinical data with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in real time, has been installed for pilot implementation at the Emergency Department (ED) of Larissa General Hospital.
The ERTRIAGE triage service system was developed by the company CAREPOI and researchers from the University of Patras, in collaboration with the Emergency Departments of Nikaia – Piraeus General Hospital and Larissa General Hospital. The system guides the operator during the triage process and supports clinical decision-making with recommendations based on algorithms and artificial intelligence.

University of Patras : ERTRIAGE® Training Program Announcement
- 30 Septmber 2025
We are pleased to announce the launch of the ERTRIAGE® training program, aimed at cultivating and promoting scientific knowledge and skills for the effective and rapid management of patients seeking emergency care due to unscheduled health loss.
The ultimate goal of this program is to train healthcare professionals in the Emergency Department (ED) in the documented application of the ERTRIAGE® AI-based machine learning system. Upon completion of the program, participants will have gained the confidence, knowledge, and skills to independently apply patient triage principles, with or without the use of the ERTRIAGE® system.
Additionally, participants will have a solid understanding of the fundamental principles behind patient flow design in hospital EDs or Primary Health Care (PHC) settings and will be equipped to contribute to the development and operation of these systems.
In alignment with the national initiatives for the advancement of emergency healthcare, the program offers comprehensive training in ED operations (space planning, staffing, quality indicators), with a primary focus on the rapid identification and management of critically ill patients.

Trial of ERTRIAGE at Nikaia General Hospital
- 15 January 2025
ERTRIAGE the innovative Artificial Intelligence system is being tested at Nikaia General Hospital as part of a research program. The software is designed to prioritize cases that arrive at the Emergency Department (ED) based on their severity.
Through a collaboration between the hospital's Emergency Department, led by General Surgeon and ED Director Dimitris Tsiftis, and the Medical School of the University of Patras, led by Dr. Lefteris Gortzis, the goal is to assist medical staff in making decisions about which cases need to be examined, referred for tests, or admitted to the hospital more quickly. This will enable better prioritization of cases in a shorter time, without subjecting patients who require urgent care to long waiting times.
